The year has just begun and Jagex has already laid out loads of the new content that RuneScape players can expect over the next few months. Community Manager Mod Shauny has showcased the game updates that are planned for release over the course of the next four months or so.
RuneScape’s 18th birthday on January 4th will bring back the celebratory in-game item ‘Anniversary cake’. The main event will be on January 7th when Mining and Smithing skills get a full rework. Mining rocks will no longer make them deplete, so players will not have to hop worlds to find them. The tiers of ore and metal also will require the same level to mine and smith as they do to wear the gear made with them. Player-owned farms will get improvements with newly purchasable animal stables and farmhands to hire.
NCSoft is preparing to expand their reach in the Western mobile game market with the upcoming new strategy RPG/MMO ‘Aion: Legions of War‘. On January 24th, Aion: LoW will launch and be playable world-wide for free on iOS and Android devices. Excited fans can now pre-register on the official website. Doing so will grant launch day rewards.
Aion: Legions of War re-imagines the PC MMORPG Aion as a narrative-driven strategy RPG. The game is about building up a roster of unique heroes to be build a powerful party and fight against bosses in tiered dungeons. Players can get together by running guild dungeons and fighting against one another in duel arenas.
Blade & Soul is well on its way to a major overhaul in South Korea. The game’s graphics are being upgraded from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4, as shown in the first half of 2018. In a recent interview with the game’s development team, new information about the game’s next class were revealed. NCSoft has not revealed the name, looks or any video footage of the new class yet – only a short description.
The yearly list of the 100 best selling games on Steam for 2018 as measured by gross revenue has been posted and as usual, a handful MMORPGs have been included. They are the games that made the most revenue on the platform this year. The list is categorized into tiers of Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
Likely due to the Summerset expansion in June and Murkmire/Wolfhunter content, The Elder Scrolls Online climbed from last year’s Gold tier ranking to this year’s Platinum tier, the highest level on the list. ESO is joined by Warframe in the Platinum tier.
2019 is already looking much brighter than 2018 has been for the MMORPG genre on PC. Fans of Western MMOs will have a handful of indie MMOs that have been in development for a long time to finally play and beta test. Publishers like Nexon and Kakao Games have good lineups of promising Eastern MMOs coming too!

During the Dungeon & Fighter Carnival Event, Nexon and subsidiary developer company Neople announced a new PC MMORPG project that is currently in development called “Project BBQ“.
Project BBQ is a 3D iteration of the popular Dungeon & Fighter MMORPG and will be an action-packed dungeon fighting game. Many elements such as some classes and some lore will be the same as in Dungeon & Fighter. There will be open fields maps and instanced dungeons. More information will be revealed in the coming months.
Mail.Ru, the Russian Internet giant known for e-mail portals, social networks (ВКонтакте or VK), and online game publishing has been announced as the designated publisher for the new action MMO Lost Ark.
While game developer Smilegate has signed a contract with Mail.Ru, no solid dates have been announced yet as far as an actual release schedule is concerned. However, we know that closed beta testing is scheduled for 2019. Sign ups for betas and Founders Packs (Early Access Kits) are already up on the official Russian Lost Ark site.
Moscow-based developer Enplex Games has recently revealed a new sci-fi survival MMO on the horizon named Population Zero. Below is over 10 minutes of pre-alpha gameplay that shows off several of its features like housing creation, gearing, harvesting, and more.
The game is set in an alien planet called Kepler where players explore and fight for survival of their colonies. Population Zero will be played on PC and is currently in pre-alpha.
